What is hospice care?
Hospice care is available to patients who no longer wish treatment directed at curing their end-stage disease. Hospice focuses on and treats the person, not the disease. A primary goal is to control pain and other symptoms so the patient can remain as alert and comfortable as possible. Hospice care includes all of the services needed to manage an individual’s medical care and also provides emotional and spiritual support for the whole family. Hospice stresses quality of life and is an alternative to extended medical or curative treatments.
How does hospice care work?
Typically, a family member serves as the primary caregiver and, when appropriate, helps make decisions for the terminally ill individual. Members of the hospice staff make regular visits to assess the patient and provide additional care or other services. The hospice team develops a care plan that meets each patient’s individual needs: medical, emotional, psychological and spiritual services. Support for family caregivers is also assessed throughout the care period. While the range of services provided will vary depending on each individual situation and the specific needs, hospice staff are available by phone 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
Am I eligible for hospice care?
Hospice care is for any person who has a life-threatening or terminal illness. A physician certifies that the patient has a life expectancy of six months or less, if the disease follows its normal course. .
Should I include hospice care in my advanced care planning?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the timing of hospice care depends on the individual’s situation and health. Your doctor and our team can provide guidance on the best course of action during advanced care planning.
How is hospice care paid for?
Most people receiving hospice care are covered by the Medicare hospice benefit. This benefit covers virtually all aspects of hospice care with little out-of-pocket expense to the patient or family. As a result, the financial burdens usually associated with caring for a terminally ill patient are virtually nonexistent. In addition, most private health plans and Medicaid in most states cover hospice services.
What is not covered?
Hospice insurers, including Medicare, do not pay for round-the-clock home nursing. In addition, experimental treatments, clinical trials or other medical services aimed at curing the disease are not covered. Many people think so but funeral services are also not covered by hospice.
